Use The Index, Luke: a clear guide to SQL indexing

A database-neutral explanation of indexing that goes well beyond ‘add an index when the query feels slow’.

This is the resource I send when someone understands basic SQL but treats indexes as magic. It starts with the data structure, follows the path of a lookup, and then shows why concatenated index order and functions on indexed columns matter.

The rest is for members.

The chapter on functions was the one that made execution plans click for me. EXPLAIN stopped feeling like a wall of mysterious arrows.
